Here and now, in the foothills of our homeland in Austria, our journey toward self-sufficiency and permaculture begins. It’s a sunny day in the garden, and we realize that space for our projects is slowly running out. Between the vegetable beds, berry paths, herb islands, and fruit trees, every inch seems to be already in use. We dream of larger spaces, of more room for our ideas and dreams.
The search for a larger piece of land, we had in mind a few hectares, in Austria is quite a challenge due to various criteria and restrictions. Often we found that the available plots were either too expensive (usually far too expensive) for our budget or zoned incorrectly, meaning they couldn’t be used for our plans.
At the beginning of the search, we didn’t realize how difficult it would be to find a plot that met all our requirements. A piece of land with building rights for a house and one or more sheds, the possibility to plant an orchard of fruit and nut trees, as well as a small mixed forest area and large green spaces for berry gardens, bee meadows, herb areas in the style of permaculture, and ideally with flowing water, seemed almost too idealistic.
On top of that, it turned out that many potential properties were only available for lease, which didn’t suit our long-term plans.
Faced with these hurdles, we began to broaden our perspective and search for alternatives beyond our familiar borders. We started to expand the idea further. What if we broadened our horizons? What if we looked beyond our familiar boundaries? And so, the conversations about emigration began.
The idea of building our lives in another country became increasingly tempting. We dreamed of new adventures, new landscapes, and a fresh start. Canada kept coming up as a possible destination, with its vast landscapes and similar nature.
Thus, our journey begins, from an overcrowded garden in Austria to the sprawling maple branches of Canada. It is the beginning of an adventure that will lead us far beyond our original borders.
