Year in Review 2024: Our Journey Towards Sustainable Living in Canada

The year 2024 was marked by significant changes and progress on our path to sustainable living in Canada.

A Behind-the-Scenes Look: Our Blog and Its Timelines

When we launched alpinerootsmaplebranches.com, our project had already been underway for over a year. Much of what we share today stems from the wealth of experiences and developments we’ve gathered since the beginning of our journey.

Our blog is less of a real-time diary and more of a lovingly curated retrospective of our experiences. The posts provide insights into milestones, challenges, and small joys that often occurred several months before publication.

This approach allows us to reflect on our experiences and present them in a way that is both inspiring and informative.

With this format, we hope to encourage you not only to celebrate the moment but also to value the time it takes to turn dreams into reality.

Spring: The Departure

Our garden in Austria had reached its limits, prompting us to search for larger spaces for our projects. After extensive research and many considerations, we ultimately decided on Canada. In May 2023, we traveled to Canada for the first time to visit the property and explore the possibilities on-site. This journey laid the foundation for our vision.

Summer: Arrival and First Steps

Our new home, a sprawling property of approximately 70 hectares, features forests, cleared areas, and a beautiful wetland. The first weeks after our arrival were dedicated to preparing the land and establishing sustainable infrastructure. We began with soil sampling to understand the soil’s properties and identify the best areas for specific crops.

Autumn: Harvest and Construction Projects

Autumn brought the first blueberry harvest from our wild blueberry fields. At the same time, we started construction projects, such as building a shelter using leftover tree trunks. Working with nature and being constantly surrounded by wildlife enriched our daily lives and deepened our connection to the environment.

Winter: Reflection and Community

The winter months were spent reflecting and planning for the year ahead. We are grateful for the support of our growing community, which helps drive our projects forward through sharing our posts, active participation, and financial contributions. Together, we strive for a greener future and look forward to the challenges and successes to come.

Looking Ahead to 2025

With the experiences and lessons of 2024, we look forward to the new year with confidence. We plan to expand our permaculture projects, strengthen our community, and continue sharing our journey with you. Your support and engagement are invaluable to us.

Achieving More Together!

We invite you to be part of our journey, share your experiences, and work together towards a sustainable future. Let’s grow and learn together.

Before you order seeds or design new beds, it helps to step back and ask two simple questions: what do you want your garden to do for you, and how does your household really eat? What to Do in the Garden Now: Winter Rest, Berry Care and Planning for Your Next Growing Season

When the garden looks quiet on the surface, our most important work begins: we thin out dense raspberry patches, plant garlic, refresh the mulch around our berries, watch how winter cabbage responds to its spot and give the soil fresh impulses. Winter becomes a silent planning season where we prepare crop rotation, soil care and berry structures so that the next garden year can start more stable, diverse and relaxed.
