NATURE IN EVERYDAY LIFE: EXPIRIENCES BETWEEN APARTMENT AND PROPERTY

Since we arrived here, our daily life has changed in many ways. The routes we take for shopping, the daily walks with Diana, and the drives between our property and the apartment have now become an integral part of our routine.

We still travel a lot on the main road around the lake and are now exploring new side roads and paths more frequently, like the “Stirling Road” shown in the middle picture.

A simple trip to the nearest town takes at least 40 minutes, and to reach the next city, we’re looking at an hour in each direction. These distances require good planning – while in Austria, we also planned ahead for a week, it wasn’t a big deal if we forgot something, as shopping was only a five-minute drive away. Here, we are learning quickly to avoid unnecessary trips.

During our walks with Diana and our drives to the property, we frequently experience special moments that bring us closer to nature. One of the highlights was spotting a beaver, which we saw both on the road and later swimming in the water. These unexpected encounters with wildlife add a special vibrancy to our everyday life here.
Our daily explorations and walks not only bring us closer to nature but also foster a deeper connection to our new surroundings. We truly enjoy the beauty that lies just within walking distance of our new home. Spending so much time in this almost picture-perfect environment gives us a lot of energy and strength for the daily grind and our future plans.
The vacation period we allowed ourselves upon arrival is now over, and it’s time to focus again on securing our residency and work permits to ensure we can stay here for the long term. However, we look ahead with confidence and are excited about the prospect of calling this place home in the future.

What It Would Take to Feed Yourself

This article shows, step by step, what it would take for two adults to feed themselves from their own land for a full year. We translate nutrient targets into concrete crop choices and areas: calorie staples (potatoes, sweet potatoes, winter squash, roots), protein from dry beans, soy, lentils and lupins, leafy/brassica greens, sauce and summer vegetables, grains and pseudograins for bread and pasta, plus fat-rich seeds, berries, fruit trees and nuts. Realistic field and storage losses are budgeted; processing (canning, fermenting, milling, flaking) and storage needs are built in. The result is a practical, cool-climate-ready plan with total area requirements, seasonal workload, and resilient meal building blocks that keep plates filled year-round.
